Diversification:
The Free Lunch that is Getting Harder to Find |
| |
March 18, 2008 |
|
| |
|
|
| |
"...Some alternative strategies are specifically designed to reduce risks. Compson notes that “compared to a typical portfolio with huge systematic risk, they are not risky. The struggle for advisors is to accept being different..."
"...Absolute return strategies work best for advisors who are concerned with capital preservation and risk reduction, and not with those whose goals are "hitting the home run." The beauty of the strategy is its accessibility to all investors... "

ABSOLUTE STRATEGIES
Hingham fund firm sees assets under management quadruple in the past year |
| |
January 8, 2008 |
|
| |
by John Chesto |
| |
|
|
| |
"...The formula is paying off for Jay Compson and Brian Hlidek, two friends from Hingham that opened Absolute Investment Advisers in their hometown in 2005.
The assets under management in the firm's Absolute Strategies fund have more than quadrupled in the past year, rising from about $180 million at the end of 2006, the fund's first full year, to $790 million at the end of 2007..."

"...''Financial advisers who put their clients' money in the Absolute fund say they're attracted to the fund because it provides a way to use hedge-fund strategies while providing the regulatory oversight and transparency of a mutual fund. Unlike hedge funds, shares in the Absolute fund can be bought or sold on a daily basis..."

2007 20 Rising Stars of Hedge Funds |

June, 2007 |

By Mark Malyszko |

Eric Hage, CIO of Mohican Financial Management in Cooperstown, NY (and Sub-Adviser to the Absolute Strategies Fund) was chosen as one of Institutional Investor News' " Rising Stars of Hedge Funds" |
| |
|
| |
"...When the convertibles market corrected in the spring of 2005, there was a mass exodus of money from the strategy and many single strategy convertible arbitrage funds could not survive. Most of the funds that did survive changed their strategy to a multi-strat platform. The net result was very few remaining pure single-strat convertible arbitrage managers, like Mohican. Even though we knew that it would take a long time for investors to come back to the convertible arbitrage strategy, we stuck to our strategy because we felt confident that we could deliver strong returns despite the market rhetoric against convertibles."

Creating an Endowment Portfolio with
Absolute Return |
| |
March, 2007 |
|
| |
By Brian Hlidek |
| |
|
|
| |
"...a gradual move toward
the endowment model for a client's portfolio
may be easier than anticipated, since the
market offers advisors a growing number of
investment options...."
"...Absolute return is a critical component
in the endowment portfolio model. Over a
full market cycle, adding hedge-like funds to
a portfolio may provide: additional diversifi
cation; reduced equity market/interest rate
risk; reduced volatility; and potentially greater
risk-adjusted returns.

Absolute Investment Retools Fund-Of-Funds-Like Mutual Fund |

"...We’ve been avoiding convertible arbitrage since launching the fund because we felt that there was too much capital chasing that area, and that’s what happened in 2004 to 2005,” he said. “Since then, we’ve seen a little bit of a shakeout so we started looking for mangers who were able to manage through that dislocation. Mohican does an excellent job of managing risk."

"...The recent stock slide spared few corners of the market -- but one fast-growing group of mutual funds didn't crack under the selling pressure..."
"...Since different hedging strategies may perform well under different market conditions, funds that offer access to a number of different strategies can also cushion a portfolio from market swings. These funds tend to operate like "funds of hedge funds," dividing assets among managers with varying investment approaches.
Wealth Manager, [Registered Investment Adviser name witheld] uses one such fund, Absolute Strategies, in clients' portfolios. The fund "really helped stabilize their overall portfolio" during the downturn, says [name witheld] the firm's chief investment officer.

"...Now we seem to have a situation where institutions are not only willing to pay “retail fees”, but are paying even higher than retail fees - and for larger volumes of business. Maybe the lack of economies of scale in smaller asset managers (like Absolute Advisers) is more than fully off-set by their ability to manage costs better. In other words, could this be a rare example of where the little guy is better served by another little guy?

"...A study by Lipper published earlier this month found that both hedge funds and hedge-like mutual funds generally help protect investors from stock - and bond-market slides without adding additional risk to the portfolio. "

Market-neutral funds mirror hedge-like strategies:

"...Another top market-neutral performer last year was Absolute Strategies Fund. It aims at outperforming bonds rather than stocks... It's run by Boston-based Absolute Advisers LLC, which was formed in 2004 by veteran hedge-fund managers and mutual-fund marketing executives..."
"...Along with co-manager Alec Petro, he [Jay Compson] picks hedge-fund managers with varying styles. "The one element they've got in common is a focus on risk-management," he said. "The net result from combining all of these strategies is volatility similar to bonds."

The Absolute

"...it's
really about diversification. Absolute return
investing has been used in the past, largely
by wealthy families and institutions, as a
way to reduce volatility and lower the risk
within a portfolio. There are times when the
market just doesn't go up, so people have
to diversify into asset classes that don't
correlate well together. This strategy differentiates
the portfolio from your other investments
and because it tends to have low volatility,
it may reduce the risk within an overall portfolio."
